How I became a marketer without a degree or experience 👀
Giving you all my secrets to getting your dream job
I just came back from a work trip (which was amazing btw) and it just made me reflect on how I ended up here!
First things first I always grew up on the internet. I am part of the fan account turned social media manager trope. But it wasn’t until 2020 that I realized that being a social media manager was an actual job. I came across Jas’ video on TikTok and haven’t looked back since.
Getting started
The most important part of getting a job in marketing or becoming a social media manager was to get experience. At the time I was studying History, which was not marketing at all. But I had bought a mini e-book to understand what social media management was and the skills that were required. I made a checklist of skills & certificates I needed and made sure to find places where I could get experience.
Getting experience
There are two things you can invest when wanting to learn a skill: time and/or money. You have to decide for yourself which one you’re willing to invest. Because I was low on money I knew I could invest my time. Hence why I did take some unpaid work in the beginning.
Whenever I look for opportunities I always ask myself the following: “Is this going to be relevant for the bigger picture?” Any experience I put under my belt has to be a skill I need to “check off” my list.
Since I was still in university I knew that it was the best place for me to get experience. I applied to be a graphic designer for one of the clubs at uni. The club required us to have a LinkedIn profile. I would spend hours looking at other people with the job I wanted to see what they had studied. That’s how I discovered the many certifications that were available to social media managers.
I was investing time in both of these things. Would post my work online and people would ask for services. That’s when I decided to

Qetsiyah

Hi Qetsiyah, thank you so much for sharing your journey to becoming a social media manager. I am on my own journey to become one and this was inspiring and encouraging. However, it seems the last sentence cuts off and then there is no continuation: "I was investing time in both of these things. Would post my work online and people would ask for services. That’s when I decided to" I'm not sure if that was the end of your story or if there is more and I'm missing it later down on the page (?)
